Our Story

Esther, Debra, Julie, and Heather met in the ordinary rhythm of a multicultural faith community. Four people from different walks of life, drawn together by conversations that lingered long after the gatherings ended. Again and again, they found themselves returning to the same conviction: in a world growing more divided, people need more than good intentions. They need tools, relationships, and real opportunities to cross cultural lines with humility and hope.

Each of them had traveled their own cultural awareness journey. Some lessons came through formal education and professional training; others through friendships, mistakes, travel, and quiet moments of self-examination. They knew firsthand that cross-cultural understanding is not automatic, it is cultivated. And they began to recognize a shared calling: to help others become more culturally aware and to create spaces where meaningful cross-cultural relationships could grow.

For a year, they met faithfully over coffee, around kitchen tables, and in one another’s homes. They listened. They researched. They prayed. They asked hard questions about what their community truly needed. Slowly, a vision began to take shape: what if they could spark a movement? One that heals division not by arguing louder, but by awakening the inherent dignity and goodness within every person.

From that vision, One Community Initiative was born. Rooted in growing self-awareness, shared experiences, and cross-cultural understanding, OCI exists to foster connection, compassion, and healing — transforming not only conversations, but the very way people see and engage with one another. What began as four friends crossing paths has become an invitation to an entire community: to choose curiosity over fear, relationship over division, and hope over isolation.
